Viral ‘Human-Sized’ Bat Tweet Sparks Controversy, but Reality May Be Less Terrifying
A tweet depicting a seemingly enormous bat in the Philippines went viral, causing both awe and skepticism among users. While the images suggest a massive bat, known as the large golden-crowned flying fox, some observers pointed out that its actual size is considerably smaller than it appears. This type of bat can indeed have a wingspan of up to 5.6 feet, which is impressively large and eerie, yet their bodies typically range from 1 to 2 feet.
The viral video cleverly manipulates perspective, positioning the bat much closer to the camera than the background, creating a visual illusion that stirs reactions. Comments ranged from humor to unease, with some imagining the bat waking up and flying directly towards them.
While the images may give the impression that this bat is capable of picking someone up and flying away, it actually weighs around 1.2 kilograms and exclusively feeds on fruits, particularly guavas. Despite its intimidating wingspan, it possesses a relatively modest body size, comparable to that of a medium-sized dog.
The debate surrounding this creature exemplifies how perspective and camera angles can dramatically alter our perception of size and reality.
