Digna Carpio, a remarkable mother residing in Queens, has been blessed with an extraordinary gift this Mother’s Day. In October, she gave birth to sextuplets, adding six healthy babies to her already bustling household. The arrival of these precious little ones has brought immeasurable joy and challenges to Digna’s life, creating a truly unique and awe-inspiring journey.
“Just being together, having a quiet and relaxing day with all of my babies, is enough,” says Digna, expressing her contentment in Spanish. However, she adds with a giggle, “But ‘relaxing’ and ‘quiet’ do not come easily to this house anymore.”
Digna, together with her husband Victor, is gradually adjusting to the joys and demands of having a full house. They are proud parents not only to the sextuplets but also to their 8-year-old son, Jhan Carlos. As Digna explains, “It’s tough going out with six babies. Just knowing they are with me, happy and healthy, is the best feeling.”
In their cozy living room, six bassinets line up neatly, where the babies rest and explore the world around them. Each child already displays a unique personality, although they may appear identical to others. Digna lovingly remarks, “To others, they look the same. I already know who is who.”
While the Carpio family experiences boundless love and joy, they also face considerable financial sacrifices. The mounting bills, including the high costs of electricity, baby food, and diapers, pose challenges to their budget. Victor, a 35-year-old maintenance worker, earns a modest biweekly salary of $900, making it difficult to cover these significant expenses.
The Carpio babies hold a special place in history. They are only the second set of sextuplets born to a New York couple and are believed to be the first Hispanic sextuplets in the history of the United States. The rarity of their birth brings both awe and responsibility to their parents.
To help with the care of the babies, two nurses from the Visiting Nurses of New York lend their support. However, once they depart at 6 p.m., Digna and Victor know that sleep will become a luxury. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, Digna muses about the future, saying, “I don’t want to get overwhelmed. I’m already thinking I’m going to need a van or a bus to take them to school.”
While financial constraints may persist for some time, the sight of their adorable children’s faces makes every sacrifice worthwhile. Digna expresses her emotions, “Sometimes I feel like I’m going to go crazy, and then I look at them. It’s the best feeling. It’s the best gift for a mother.”
Digna Carpio’s journey as a mother of sextuplets is one of strength, love, and resilience. Her story serves as a testament to the power of familial bonds and the joy that can be found amidst the challenges. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, let us honor Digna and all mothers who embrace the profound joys and sacrifices that come with nurturing a growing family.
